Practical school guide

How many name labels do you need for school?

For most children, 25 to 30 labels cover the core school wardrobe. Plan for 40 to 50 if you also want to label sports kit, outerwear, seasonal items and replacements.

Start with what regularly leaves home

You do not have to label every garment your child owns. Begin with anything that goes to school, daycare, sports practice, camp or a caregiver's home. Prioritize items that children commonly remove during the day: sweaters, coats, hats and sports layers.

These are planning ranges, not a universal rule. A uniform-based school may need fewer labels than a school where children wear a different outfit every day.

A simple pack-size decision

10 labels

A few high-priority items, a small daycare set or a top-up.

25 labels

One child’s core school wardrobe without many spares.

50 labels

A fuller school year, sports kit and replacement items.

Match the label to the surface

Iron-on name labels are for suitable garment fabric, such as the inside of a collar or waistband. Check that the fabric can take the required heat.

Care-tag name labels sit on the heat-safe care label already sewn inside the garment. Leave the original wash symbols and fabric information visible.

Use waterproof stickers for bottles, lunchboxes and other hard surfaces. Do not iron directly onto waterproof shells, nylon or any item whose care instructions rule out heat.
